Artist Statement
I’ve always been fascinated by people. Long before I ever picked up a camera, I enjoyed traveling and learning about new languages, places and cultures. Embracing a humanist philosophy, I want to understand the experiences and background that make each person unique, along with the common qualities that connect us all as members of humankind.
Over the past fifteen years, I’ve been privileged to meet and photograph more than a thousand people on five continents and across diverse geographies and cultures. With each person I photograph, I try to show a unique individual with a unique history, circumstances, and aspirations.
Making these portraits is a collaboration between the subject and the photographer, calling for active engagement on both sides of the camera. I work hard to earn the trust of the individuals who are willing to share themselves. As we get to know each other, we lower our guard and reveal our personalities.
My photography follows my humanistic belief in people’s inherent value, dignity and goodness. While my photographs show many differences in appearance, dress, culture, faith and way of life, I hope you’ll find they also reveal that we human beings are more alike than we are different.
