Artist’s Statement

I developed my love for nature as a child, playing in woods and fields when visiting family in Lincolnshire. As an adult, living and working in an urban environment, this connection with the organic world lay dormant for many years. Country walks, and a passion for birdwatching, have reawakened this love and led to many wonderful encounters with wildlife, and a deeper awareness of the cycle of the seasons.

Photography offers me a way of crystallising these moments and bringing them into the built environment. Here they act as windows into the unparalleled beauty of the natural world. Like many others, I find therapeutic value in such images. They reconnect us with the timelessness of nature, offering a welcome anchor in our rapidly changing and unpredictable world. The blackbird is still blackbirding like he did in the woods around my uncle’s farm. The sun still sets over Fonthill Lake as it did for my great, great grandfather in Wiltshire in the 1850s.

My work focuses primarily on English wildlife and landscapes. I’m drawn to the often-understated beauty of creatures like the blue tit, fox, and sparrowhawk. For me, the joy comes from capturing animals in the context of their environment, simply going about their everyday activities. With my landscapes, it is all about the way light transforms features and textures on a larger scale.
