Mind’s Eye : Abstracted
1st – 31st August 2023
Howard Rankin is a UK-based photographer with a passion for music, nature, and travel. Following a successful 30+ year career in finance, he is pursuing his love of photography to tie all his passions together and brings them to life. His work runs from the realistic — quiet landscapes, African wildlife and concert photography — to the abstract, where he uses a variety of in-camera and post-processing techniques to create unique images founded in a thought, an emotion, or a narrative, rather than pure representation.
His work has been part of a wide variety of group exhibitions, including The Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year (2023), Abstract Rhythm & Blue Notes at the Whitstable Arts Centre (2022) and Rhythm of the Unseen at the Soho Photo Gallery in New York City (2023). In addition, multiple works from his “Warmth of the Soul” portfolio are part of Montefiore Medical Center’s permanent art collection in New York.
His work has been recognised in juried competitions, including Landscape Photographer of the Year (2017), Outdoor Photographer of the Year, Portfolio II (2020), Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year, (2020, 2022) as well as authoring articles in On Landscape, and ICM Photography Magazine.
Images from his concert photography are featured on album artwork for multiple artists including The Waterboys, Steve Hackett, Heather Findlay, Mostly Autumn, Rosalie Cunningham and Chantel McGregor among others.
“My camera is a natural conduit for my eye, my imagination, my heart & soul…me.”
